A non-hitch bike rack won’t be able to handle the load. We recommend you go for a hitch rack designed for electronic bikes for your SUV because e-bikes are more than five times heavier as compared to regular bikes. It is a testament to Nakamura’s skills as a producer, but moreover a recognition of his incred- ible craft and aesthetic sensibilities when it comes to creating something profound from literally nothing at all. Each piece, moves between passages of deep rhythm and pulse which give way to caus- tic swaths of feedback, noise and at times a deep sense of harmony. On Culvert NIMB#10, Nakamura’s work takes on an incredibly dynamic and at times volcanic quality. He maintains a tireless sense of curiosity, seeking to constantly expand the range of the instrument and subvert its pre- conceived role. Over 10 volumes, Nakamura has stretched the capacities of the mixing console in ways that both shock and delight. Toshimaru Nakamura’s No Input Mixing Board instrument is without question one of the most per- sonal and experimental explorations of its kind. CULVERT - NO-INPUT MIXING BOARD 10 ROOM40 “We’ve been waiting for someone to do something like this for some time,” says Linda Hinnov, a paleoclimatologist at George Mason University, who was not involved in the study. “The geologic record and our calculation seem to be very much in agreement until 58 million years ago.” Most significantly, Zeebe and Lourens’s calculations show the PETM also began around one of the 405,000-year cycles, which tracks with past hyperthermal events, suggesting planetary dynamics initiated it. “We came up with a remarkable match,” Zeebe says. ![]() ![]() In their study, Zeebe and Lourens examined geologic records to identify orbital eccentricity cycles, calculating a new astronomical solution for the positions and velocities of the planets in the past and checking it against the sediments from Atlantic Ocean seafloors. One cycle in particular, with a duration of 405,000 years, helps geologists calibrate planetary dynamics using sediment records: like clockwork, when this cycle brought Earth closer to the sun, the climate warmed, leaving behind evidence laid down in rock. And its orbit slips between circular and elliptical paths in complex cycles across millennia. ![]() Nudged by the gravitation of Jupiter, Mars, Venus and other planets, our world’s axial tilt and precession are always slowly shifting. A 405,000-Year ClockĮarth’s orbit is eccentric, meaning it has changed repeatedly over time. “Given an orbital trigger for the PETM and the strong evidence for orbital pacing of the subsequent hyperthermals, no other trigger is necessary,” Zeebe says. In the new study, published in Science, Richard Zeebe, a paleoceanographer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and Lucas Lourens, a geoscientist at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, combined astronomical and geologic data to push our detailed knowledge of Earth’s position back another eight million years, linking the PETM’s onset with a larger cycle of orbital change. Geologists can help by seeking clues about Earth’s paleoclimate in ancient seafloor sediments and using those data to extrapolate information about the planet’s past position, relative to the sun. Astronomers’ best models of planetary motions cannot go further back in time than about 50 million years. But a new study suggests the PETM may have been instigated by subtle shifts in Earth’s orbit around the sun.ĭetermining where Earth was tens of millions of years ago is a surprisingly thorny problem, because the sun and its planets form a chaotic system, in which minuscule orbital changes can, over time, magnify into enormous effects. A surge in volcanic eruptions likely played a role, perhaps aided by a comet impact. For decades, researchers have puzzled over what triggered this Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), peering through the lens of the past to better understand our planet’s present-day warming. Such “hyperthermal” events periodically come and go throughout Earth’s history, but this one was particularly intense for unclear reasons. Crocodiles basked on Arctic beaches lined with palm trees, and steamy swamps and jungles stretched across much of the midlatitudes. ![]() In a span of scarcely 20,000 years-not even a rounding error in most measures of geologic time-massive amounts of carbon dioxide flowed into the atmosphere, and average temperatures rose by five to eight degrees Celsius. The ‘Pascal’ Quadro P2000 was 15% faster than the ‘Maxwell’ Quadro M2000 and 26% faster than the ‘Kepler’ Quadro K2200. Using the SPECapc for SolidWorks 2015 benchmark we saw a small but significant improvement, generation on generation in this display style. When modelling in SolidWorks, the most popular way to view CAD models is in shaded with edges mode. The tests were run at FHD (1,920 x 1,080) resolution. To try and minimise CPU bottlenecks, we used the fastest CPU we could find, and you’d be hard pushed to one in a workstation faster than a 4.8GHz Core i7-7700K CPU. To give this some context we tested the new ‘Pascal’ Quadros alongside older generation ‘Maxwell’ and ‘Kepler’ Quadro GPUs. Design viz, VR and GPU rendering applications, for example, are much less tied into the speed of the CPU. And because CPU frequency has stagnated over the past few years, performance in 3D CAD software has not increased as much as it has in other applications. Core 3D performance in manufacturing and architectural BIM applications like SolidWorks and Autodesk Revit are heavily dependent on the frequency (GHz) of the CPU. Unfortunately, CAD software is notoriously bad at doing so. This is great if your application can take advantage of the plentiful GPU power on offer. The Quadro P2000, for example, boasts 66% more peak single precision compute performance and 32% more peak memory bandwidth than the Quadro M2000, which only came to market nine months ago. Nvidia continues to make huge strides in GPU performance. Furthermore, with two Quadro Sync II cards, and a motherboard capable of taking ten PCIe add-in boards, eight Quadro P4000s can also be used to drive a single system powerwall with up to 32 screens. ![]() The card features four DisplayPort 1.4 connectors and can support up to four 4K (4,096 x 2,160) displays at 120Hz or up to four 5K (5,120 x 2,880) displays at 60Hz. ![]() However, it still needs a 6-pin auxiliary PCIe power connector to draw additional power direct from your workstation’s Power Supply Unit (PSU). Rated at up to 5.3 TFLOPs of single precision performance and with a maximum power consumption of 105W, the Quadro P4000 is extremely energy efficient. And while it’s by no means powerful enough for all professional VR workflows, it looks to be a great choice for entry-level to mid-range VR applications – not forgetting very high-end CAD, real time design viz and GPU rendering. With a list price of £950, and boasting superior performance to the dual slot ‘Maxwell’ Quadro M5000 (and single slot AMD Radeon Pro WX 7100) the Quadro P4000 looks set to change the landscape for professional VR. This meant you not only needed a workstation capable of powering a 150W+ GPU but, with prices starting at just under £2,000, a substantial budget. Prior to this, if you wanted a Quadro for VR, even for entry-level VR, you had to buy a dual slot card. The Quadro P4000 (8GB) takes centre stage in this product launch because it is Nvidia’s first single slot ‘VR Ready’ professional GPU. Our test machine was a Scan 3XS Ultimate 2D Plus workstation with a brand new ‘Kaby Lake’ Intel Core i7-7700K CPU, overclocked to 4.8GHz, 32GB of RAM, NVMe SSD and Windows 7 Professional. As part of the testing we also got hands-on with several new generation pro VR tools using the HTC Vive Business Edition, a special enterprise version of the impressive Head Mounted Display (HMD). As always, we tested these GPUs with real world professional design, engineering, and visualisation applications. In the lead up to today’s launch Nvidia provided us with a sample Quadro P2000 and Quadro P4000 for review. (see chart above for full specifications and prices – US prices have not yet been set). All five models will be available in March and will replace the current ‘Maxwell’ Quadro GPUs.
